New Bedford Standard Times Endorses “NO” Vote on Question 2
On October 7th, the New Bedford Standard Times published an editorial endorsing a NO vote on Question 2, stating the so-called “death with dignity law is fatally flawed.” Their editorial highlights two of the major flaws in Question 2: the lack of requirement for consultation with a psychiatrist before the patient gets a lethal prescription, and the lack of a required referral to a palliative care expert to best determine end of life care. The editorial also notes that Massachusetts voters cannot rely on the Legislature fixing these flaws if it passes on November 6th. Massachusetts voters should not vote on a ballot question with the assumption that the legislature will “fix” any issues that may concern voters. And Question 2 cannot be changed between now and Election Day. Residents are voting on Question 2 as presently written.
